Apple’s new iPhones will inevitably hog the limelight this week, but it’s just as important (from the music industry’s perspective, anyway) that the company’s latest iOS software is being released commercially too.

iOS 12 has been available in various betas since its announcement in June, but overnight it went live for all compatible devices. As we’ve already reported, iOS 12 includes new features for the Apple Music streaming service, including lyric search and improved artist profiles. There’s also a feature called ‘Siri Shortcuts’ which uses Apple’s voice assistant to perform multi-step tasks in third-party apps. For example, playing a certain album, station or playlist in Pandora by saying a certain (chosen by the user) phrase. There are also some interesting non-music-related features, such as new ‘Screen Time’ features to track weekly stats on how much people are using their phones, and (possibly) encourage them to spend a little less time squinting at a smartphone screen.

Don’t underestimate the other aspect of iOS 12 though: it’s *much* zippier, even on earlier iPhones than this year’s batch. That’s relevant in terms of those older iPhones remaining in use and being passed on between families, for example.Apple’s new iPhones will inevitably hog the limelight this week, but it’s just as important (from the music industry’s perspective, anyway) that the company’s latest iOS software is being released commercially too.
