Spotify’s latest new advertising unit has an audio twist, with Warner Bros’ much-talked-about remake of movie ‘A Star Is Born’ the first to use it. The pair created a video ad for the film that uses 3D sound, when listened to through headphones, to recreate the experience you’d have in a cinema.

“We used a specialized audio production technique that delivers audio to the Spotify user so that their ears and brain interpret the sounds as being omnidirectional,” Spotify’s head of sales, entertainment industry, Andi Frieder told AdWeek. “This allows placement of sound not just left and right, but above, behind, and in front of the listener in a seemingly 3D space.” For now, this is an advertising thing: but Spotify experimenting with 3D audio could have some potential for music on its platform in the future too.
