Last Friday saw the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, the rootin’ tootin’ Wild-West sequel from Rock Star Games, which is also behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise. And its latest game did rather well on its opening weekend, grossing $725m. That makes it the second most-lucrative entertainment launch ever, behind only the $1bn grossed by Grand Theft Auto V on its opening weekend in September 2013.
There’s also a fun music angle to Red Dead Redemption 2’s release: its soundtrack included (without fanfare beforehand) a brand new track from D’Angelo. ‘May I? Standing Unshaken — Oh Traveller Have a Seat’ popped up in the game’s fifth chapter, prompting New York magazine’s music critic Craig Jenkins to tweet his astonishment: “Holy f*** did Red Dead slip a new D’Angelo song in?” It seems it did.
