Chinese tech firm Bytedance bought social app Musical.ly (obligatory clarification for new readers: nothing to do with us) earlier this year, then merged it with another app called TikTok, which offers similar ‘share your mime’n’dance music videos’ features. How’s that going? Pretty well, according to a report from research firm Apptopia. “Monthly active users of the app have grown from 100 million to more than 130 million in the past three months,” it claimed. “Comparing the three months of downloads before the rollover to the three months after, worldwide downloads are up 20% while U.S. downloads are up 25%.”
The report goes on to suggest that TikTok is outpacing even the biggest social apps for downloads in the US, and that its engagement (the relationship between daily and monthly active users – so how many people are using it a lot) outpaces Snapchat, for one.
