This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been keeping an eye on YouTube’s global charts, but the video service has confirmed that its three most-played artists of 2018 all come from Latin America.
Puerto Rican artist Ozuna has generated more than 8.7bn views on YouTube so far this year to take top spot, ahead of Colombian singer J Balvin (with 7.1bn views) and Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny (whose views weren’t quantified in YouTube’s blog post).
“At the start of 2017 there were 5 videos from Latin artists in YouTube’s Billion Views Club and today there are 41,” explained YouTube. “More than half of the top 100 most-viewed music videos of 2018 are Latin and 8 of the top 10 most-viewed music videos of 2018 feature Latin artists.”
