Canadian cellist and composer Zoe Keating has made a habit of publishing details of her income from digital-music services: for example in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
Now she has shared some more data on her 2018 earnings, albeit in a tweet rather than an online spreadsheet, so it’s just a few details. The tweet is based on her Spotify Wrapped stats for the year, although Keating’s additional notes aren’t quite what Spotify would have been hoping for artists to share.
“In 2018 my music was listened to on Spotify for 190k hours by 241,631 people. Those 2,252,293 streams netted me $12,231, which is 39.2% of my annual rent,” wrote Keating. “If you love the music please consider going to a show or supporting my work directly at zoekeating.com. Thank you!”
Based on these figures, Keating – an independent artist who owns all her rights, and operates through a distributor – is earning $0.0054 per Spotify stream, on average.
