Music Ally had been wondering if 2018 would be the year when streaming services powered Mariah Carey to the Christmas number one around the world. That happened in Australia, although in the UK, the British public’s love of pastry meat-treats won out as a novelty song about sausage rolls hit the top spot.

But Mariah can celebrate one global milestone for her ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ track: it now holds the record for the most one-day streams on Spotify, thanks to 10.8m plays on Christmas Eve. That was enough to snaffle the record from the late XXXTentacion, whose death in June prompted 10.4m one-day streams of his track ’SAD!’.

It won’t surprise you to hear that Carey’s Christmas hit has now dropped out of Spotify’s global top-50 chart: resuming its 11-month-long hibernation period until reappearing to (surely) set a new record this Christmas.
