NPR and Edison Research have published their latest ‘Smart Audio Report’about the growth of smart speakers in the US. It claims that around 53 million Americans now own these devices – 21% of the adult population.

14 million of those got their first smart speaker in 2018, according to the survey. The study also tracks a growth in multiple-speaker ownership: 22% of owners now have two of the devices, while 30% have three or more – the latter stat is up from 17% a year ago. That means there are (according to NPR/Edison’s estimates) 118.5m smart speakers being used in US households, up from 66.7m at the end of 2017.

The survey also updates its stats on how people are using these devices. 29% of owners use them several times a day, and 24% nearly every day. 18% use them at least once per week, 8% at least once per month, and 5% less than once per month. Meanwhile, 16% of smart speaker owners’ devices are gathering dust, never used.
