Spoiler: It’s extremely unlikely that Amazon will ever announce exactly how many music-streaming customers it has in India – there isn’t even an official figure for its global listenership. But an interview with Sahas Malhotra, director of Amazon Music in India, by news site Business Today has revealed another sort-of statistic.

“While the company refused to share the active Prime Music subscriber base, it did mention that in the last five months, the user base has doubled in India,” explained the website.

Prime Music only launched there in late February 2018, so bear in mind that it’s still a relatively new service: any marketing campaigns kicking in during the second half of 2018 will have had a strong chance of producing impressive-sounding (in percentage terms) spikes in Prime Music’s listenership.

Other stats shared by Amazon with Business Today: “The number of Prime Music listeners adopting voice to listen to music is growing day by day – over 3.5 times” and “listeners who use Alexa for interacting with the app, end up using it for a longer duration – there have been an over five times jump in their listening hours vis a vis non-voice listeners”.
