We are genuinely sorry for what’s on your internal jukebox for the rest of today. But this is a genuinely-interesting data story about viral hit ‘Baby Shark’, with some stats collated by video-analytics firm Tubular Insights. It notes that the original version of the children’s song, uploaded by South Korean educational channel Pinkfong! in mid-2016, has been watched more than 2.2bn times on YouTube so far.
Yet this is far from the whole story, as other channels made their own versions, while fans posted videos of themselves performing the song’s dance. “In fact, the top 10 most-viewed ‘Baby Shark’ videos have generated almost 4.6bn views,” noted Tubular Insights.
Meanwhile, the fan-made ‘Baby Shark Challenge’ videos have generated 396m views on YouTube so far, with the vast majority (388m) coming from influencers. You can add 166m challenge views on Facebook, according to the company, although it doesn’t have a number for TikTok (and before that, Musical.ly), which have also been big platforms for ‘Baby Shark’ to spread.
