Spotify gets Chuck D for eight-part podcast about The Clash

It was clear last week just how much welly Spotify is willing to put behind podcasts in the year ahead, with up to $500m earmarked for acquisitions of tech and content – including its deals for Gimlet Media and Anchor.

Now Spotify has announced details of its next original, exclusive podcast: an eight-part documentary called ‘Stay Free: The Story of The Clash’. It’ll launch on 28 February on Spotify, and is narrated by Public Enemy’s Chuck D.

There’s also an interesting production partner: BBC Studios, the production-company offshoot from British broadcaster the BBC. That might seem strange, given that Spotify’s podcasts push is a direct challenge to the BBC’s own radio stations. However, it’s not so unusual really: BBC Studios makes shows for a range of non-BBC broadcasters already, so Spotify is simply another distribution partner.
