Netflix and Spotify aren’t in competition for content at this point, apart from in one area: podcasts. Yes, Netflix is commissioning original audio podcasts, with the latest example being Strong Black Legends. It’s a podcast about African-Americans who’ve made a big impact in the entertainment industry, hosted by former BuzzFeed pod-host Tracy Clayton.
But wait a second, Netflix’s service is all about video, so how does it distribute audio-only podcasts to listeners? And the answer is… through Spotify! Well, through Spotify, iTunes and other podcast distribution services: there’s no exclusive deal here. And while this isn’t a big deal in the grand-business scheme of things, it’s interesting to see Netflix exploring audio-only content and putting it out through these other services.
