Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s ‘Despacito’ may have been released more than two years ago now, but it’s still setting new records on YouTube. The original music video for the track, released in January 2017, has just passed the milestone of 6bn views. It’s the first video of any kind (i.e. not just music) to have reached this view-count on YouTube, and it’s 1.9bn views ahead of its nearest rival: another music video, Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’.

According to YouTube, people are still watching ‘Despacito’ 2.8m times a day on average: well down on its peak of 25.7m daily views, but still impressive given the song’s age. A separate official-audio version of the track’s remix featuring Justin Bieber has 640m YouTube views.

It’s a different story on Spotify, where the remix has out-streamed the original version of the track – they have 1.2bn and 956.1m streams respectively on that platform. Then again, it’s not quite the same as YouTube, where a video is doing battle with an audio track.
