UMG boss excited by mobile potential for streaming growth

Universal Music chief Sir Lucian Grainge keynoted the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona this week, stressing the excitement his company feels about the mobile industry globally.

“In some regions of the world there are more mobile phones than there are credit cards, and that excites us,” said Grainge, outlining why already “the role of mobile business in streaming has been absolutely critical”.

Grainge was talking about the popularity of telco music-streaming bundles, citing figures from UMG’s own research suggesting that up to 40% of music-streaming customers have been acquired via this route. Grainge also called on the mobile industry to avoid “going stale” as the music business seeks to work hand-in-hand with telcos and handset makers to grow streaming in some of the emerging markets across the world.
