Spotify had more than one million people using its service in India a week after launch, but what were they listening to? The company shed some light on that last night in a blog post.
“What we found is that Indians are starting off strong by listening to musicians and tracks from around the globe, with 68 percent of artists in the top 50 hailing from somewhere other than India,” claimed Spotify. Perhaps a not-so-subtle nudge for Warner Music Group, whose catalogue is currently missing from Spotify India as a result of the companies’ dispute.
“Although the top-streamed songs represent music from around the world, the most-searched artists tend to be local,” added Spotify. And the most-streamed song on Spotify India in its first week? ‘Sucker’ by the Jonas Brothers, with Benny Blanco, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Daddy Yankee, Lauv and Khalid also in the top 10 tracks – only one Indian artist, Akhil, made it into that list. However, when it comes to the top 10 artists on Spotify India, Arijit Singh, Tanishk Bagchi, Badshah, Neha Kakkar, A.R. Rahman and Pritam ensure a stronger home-grown contingent.
