The UK’s Musicians Union (MU) is the latest industry entity to launch a mentoring scheme for women. It’s working with SheSaid.so, the group which has already been active in this field.
In the MU’s case, its scheme will see 20 women chosen: 10 mentors and 10 mentees, who’ll meet every month, while also attending bi-monthly events for professional development.
“We know female musicians make up a small percentage of festival line-ups globally and representation of females in other sectors of the industry still isn’t where it should be,” said the MU’s equality, diversity and inclusion official John Shortell. “I hope that that the mentoring scheme will empower our female members by giving them a meaningful opportunity to learn from female role models who have overcome barriers in the industry, and paved the way for future generations of female musicians.”
The MU says that it’s welcoming applications “from all women – including trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people who are female-identifying” for the scheme.
