Will Spotify’s launch in India trigger a price war among competing music-subscription services? It’s possible: JioSaavn has just slashed the price of its annual JioSaavn Pro subscription by as much as 75%. That’s according to a report on the website NewsBytes.
“Previously, the plan was available at Rs. 999/year, but now, you can get the same deal at Rs. 299,” wrote journalist Shubham Sharma. That’s a cut in dollar terms from $14.50 to around $4.34 for an annual subscription. By contrast, Spotify launched with an annual-subscription price of Rs. 1,189 earlier this year. We’re still getting the final word on that Rs. 299 price though: journalist Amit Gurbaxani, who writes for Music Ally from India, told us that he’s seeing the offer as Rs. 399, while this tweet suggests that the deal may be Rs. 299 for the first year and then Rs. 399 thereafter. In either case, it’s a big discount, albeit one that isn’t unknown in India: rival service Gaana has also made an annual sub available for that cost.
