Gaana recently announced that it was the first Indian streaming service to reach 100 million monthly active users. Now rival JioSaavn may have reached the same milestone. In fact, MBW reported that the service now has around 104 million users, as briefed by ‘sources close to the company’. This is thus a scrap over who’s the biggest service in India.

JioSaavn is the result of a merger of two services: Saavn (which had 22 million active users in July 2017) and JioMusic (the service belonging to Indian telco Reliance Jio). “JioSaavn has grown exponentially over the last five months since their integration ,” claimed MBW’s source. One obvious question sparked by the duelling milestones presents itself though. Estimates in India have suggested that there are around 150 million active music-streaming users in the country. Yet if the two key services are claiming 100 million each (with Spotify reporting two million of its own listeners in India yesterday), is this a case of major overlap, or should we be talking about a market of 200 million-plus streamers?
