If you, like Spotify and Pandora, are eager for more information on the podcasts market, venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz has you covered. It has published a report (well, a very long article really) called ‘Investing in the Podcast Ecosystem in 2019’ which gathers LOTS of useful data.

Some stats we’ve reported here already: like 62 million Americans saying they’ve listened to a podcast in the last week (from Edison Research and Triton Digital’s latest ‘The Infinite Dial’ report). Other highlights include a Nielsen stat suggesting that smartphones are the dominant device used for listening to podcasts on, although smart speakers are growing sharply from a small base; podcasts are most-often consumed at home (48%) or in a car (26%); Apple Podcasts accounts for 63% of listening – down from 80% a few years ago – with Spotify the second-biggest with around 9.5% of listening, followed by a host of smaller players. There’s also the reminder that per hour, podcasts generate around $0.01 of revenue per listener – “on average, 10x less than radio”. There’s lots more to get your teeth into in the full report.
