The late dance star Avicii (Tim Bergling) is getting his first posthumous album release this year: ‘TIM’.

Facebook has announced that its Oculus virtual-reality division will be running a premiere of the new album on 6 June, through its Oculus Venues app. “We’re honoured to partner with Avicii Music and Geffen Records to bring the album to life through music visualisation in a social VR experience,” it announced.

“Beginning at 10:00 am PT on June 6, the album will play at the top of each hour for a 12-hour event where people around the world can come together and share the experience.”

Geffen’s Neil Jacobsen is also quoted as saying that when he was alive, Bergling saw virtual reality as an important coming shift in music consumption. “The music album is in a challenged place right now, and VR can be a vehicle to bring that format into its next iteration. To a small degree, we are playing with that idea in this TIM virtual reality album listening experience,” said Jacobsen. Anyway, 6 June is today, so you can get a sense of how that experience works from tonight, if you have the necessary Oculus hardware.
