Universal Music works with YouTube to remaster old music videos

Universal Music Group is following in the Spice Girls’ footsteps – not a sentence we ever expected to write in a Music Ally story – by remastering some classic videos for YouTube viewers in 2019.

The Spice Girls, if you remember, started replacing their grainy old videos with spiffing new 4K-quality ones earlier this year. Now UMG is working with YouTube itself to remaster more than 100 videos by artists including the Beastie Boys, Janet Jackson, Kiss, Lady Gaga, Lionel Richie, No Doubt and The Killers. “And this is just the beginning. YouTube and Universal Music Group are committed to fully upgrading nearly 1,000 music videos, painstakingly remastering some of the most important works in the history of the format to the highest possible standards,” announced YouTube, which aims to have the 1,000 available before the end of 2020.

As with the Spice Girls vids, the new versions will be uploaded in place of the older videos, thus retaining their view-counts, likes and URLs. Also interesting, the phrase “exclusively on YouTube” is used in YouTube’s blog post
