What can the three major labels; Beggars Group, Domino, Warp and other indie labels; SJM Concerts and Festival Republic; and artists including Radiohead, Wolf Alice and Suede agree on? Well: that “governments and media institutions to tell the truth about the climate and ecological emergency” of course.

A group of music companies, industry bodies and artists in the UK have come together under the banner of Music Declares Emergency, an independent organisation that plans to throw the music industry’s weight behind climate activism. You can read its declaration here, which besides promising to lobby governments on climate issues, also says that “we acknowledge the environmental impact of music industry practices and commit to taking urgent action”. It’s not just empty words either: the body’s website offers some ideas to labels, artists, managers, publishers, venues, studios, festivals and promoters for *how* they can make changes to their business and “support your declaration through action”, rather than just signing the declaration and feeling good about themselves.
