‘Old Town Road’ is old hat: it’s all about ‘Seoul Town Road’ with the cool kids nowadays. Maybe. Yes, Lil Nas X has dropped yet another remix of this year’s biggest track: RM from K-Pop stars BTS is the collaborator this time, with Lil Nas X tweeting yesterday “last one i PROMISSEE” (possibly while crossing his fingers behind his back and checking his inbox to see which other stars are clamouring to board the bandwagon).
All of this is playing out beautifully for him in the US, where the Billboard charts count remixes as part of a track’s overall total. That means every time a new ‘Old Town Remix’ comes out, it helps to keep the original track at the top of the singles chart – “in general if it’s similar in lyrics, music and production, they’re rolled into one,” Billboard’s charts guru Gary Trust recently told NPR.
‘Old Town Road’ has been atop the US singles chart for 16 weeks so far: one more week and it’ll set a new record. Expect to see the strategy of releasing a new remix every two or three weeks become a familiar feature in the US industry from now on…
