In Spotify’s earnings call with analysts last week, CEO Daniel Ek said that listening to music-focused podcasts has been growing fast on the platform: “If you look historically at podcasting that’s not been a big category, but it’s becoming a bigger one,” he said. It’s no surprise, then, to see the steady flow of new music-podcast announcements continuing this week.
Gregory Porter is adopting what we’ll now call ‘The Ezra Strategy’ by launching an interview-based podcast where he’s asking the questions. ‘The Hang‘ will feature guests including Kamasi Washington, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Annie Lennox and Jeff Goldblum – the latter will be the first episode on 8 August.
Also coming up, a podcast called ‘Dolly Parton’s America‘ which will launch in the autumn with nine episodes. This isn’t an official show from Dolly though: it’s from production firm WNYC Studios and radio host Jad Abumrad, best known in podcasting circles for his role on popular show Radiolab. “She’s been called the “Great Unifier”* for her rare ability to bring people together across divides. What does @DollyParton’s story tell us about America? I’ve been going back home to Nashvlle to figure it out,” he tweeted by way of introduction.
