Congratulations to Blackpink, who’ve become the first K-Pop artist to reach the milestone of 30 million subscribers to their YouTube channel. What’s particularly impressive here is that it’s only six months since they became the first to reach 20 million, meaning that the group have been averaging nearly 1.7 million new subscribers a month since then. That period has been dominated (on their channel) by different offshoot-videos from their single ‘Kill This Love’, as well as a number of episodes of the band’s ‘Blackpink Diaries’, which reached its 14th episode a week ago. There’s also a caveat, given the fierce rivalry between some superfans of Blackpink and fellow K-Pop stars BTS: the latter band’s videos are split between their management company Big Hit Entertainment’s channel (which has 28.7 million subscribers) and their own BangtanTV (22.1 million), so BTS fans may well argue that it’s not a straight comparison. When it comes to weekly views, both groups are doing well: BTS are 21st in YouTube’s latest global ‘top artists’ chart with 101m views, while Blackpink are 30th with 76.4m views. While superfans may spar, the overall picture is healthy for K-Pop’s global growth.
