The transition continues from Google Play Music to YouTube Music. Google has announced that the latter app will now be pre-installed on all devices running the latest versions of its Android operating system. That’s Android 9 and Android 10, to be specific.
For now, this is likely to to be something of a niche: as a guide, Google’s latest data for Android-version share (from May 2019) showed that only 10.4% of active Android devices were using version 9 of the operating system. Android 10 hadn’t been released yet. Still, the change – replacing the previous Google Play Music pre-install – will get YouTube Music in front of more people. YouTube’s task remains the same as ever though: not just getting people to use its music app, but persuading them to upgrade to a full premium subscription.
