An interview with Gautam Talwar, Spotify’s new managing director for south-east Asia, has yielded some interesting stats about the popularity of ‘OPM’ music from the Philippines. OPM? That’s ‘original Pilipino music’ (or ‘original Pinoy music’) – classic pop songs from the Philippines.
“OPM content has surpassed 10 billion streams. Last year, OPM dominated the most-streamed tracks in the Philippines,” Talwar told news site ANCX. In fact, the genre accounted for the first, second and fourth most-streamed tracks on Spotify in the Philippines in 2018. The article also cites OPM hit ‘Kahit Ayaw Mo Na’ by This Band, for appearing on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart, breaking out of its homeland. At the time of writing, the track has more than 69m streams on Spotify globally. Talwar also trumpets the growth of Spotify’s ‘Tatak Pinoy’ playlist, which now has more than 1.1 million followers, and says that Spotify is preparing to roll out its podcasts push in south-east Asia.
