UK-based artist Ashnikko is having a moment in the spotlight with a track called ‘Stupid’. Featuring ‘Yung Baby Tate’, the song is currently perched in second spot in Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart, with 4.6m streams so far on that service. Its ‘official audio’ version on YouTube is about to cross 1m views, although an unofficial lyric-video uploaded by the ‘TikTokTunes’ channel has 2.1m views too. That’s one clue to why ‘Stupid’ is taking off: it’s the latest previously-unknown track to go viral on TikTok.

Genius has been digging in to what happened. “Nearly 400,000 TikTok videos have been made with the official audio for the song since it became a meme last month,” it reported. Based on an Instagram post from Ashnikko, the spark for that virality appears to have been an account called Gluecosebaby posting the audio on TikTok.

This is an increasingly-familiar thing, but what’s interesting here is the speed at which a TikTok trend has jumped over to the music-streaming services: it seems people really have been seeking out the original track after seeing the TikTok videos.
