Artists chip in to $11m funding round for startup Sandbox VR

Sandbox VR is one of the startups working on ‘location-based virtual reality’ technology. That doesn’t mean running around the streets playing Pokémon Go with a headset on, bumping into lamp-posts, however. It’s about VR installations that people can visit and experience, without having to own their own headset. Sandbox VR’s latest project is a Star Trek VR installation in San Francisco, for example.

Anyway, Music Ally is interested in the company because of its latest funding round – $11m – and specifically the identity of some of the investors. Variety reports that Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and Will Smith are among the individual investors taking part in the funding, which takes Sandbox VR’s total raised so far to $83m. Sports stars and actors are among the other investors.

“Their support is a vote of confidence that our platform will one day become the new medium for the future of sports, music, and storytelling,” said CEO Steve Zhao. Which makes us wonder what kind of musical experiences Sandbox VR might be cooking up. Watch this space…
