We’re in the thick of year-end-charts season, with TikTok the latest to reveal the big winners on its platform in 2019. There are no prizes for guessing who the most popular music artist was: Lil Nas X takes that crown, in a top 10 populated equally by established names (Mariah Carey, Lizzo and Billie Eilish all feature) and artists who’ve benefitted from TikTok memes as part of their rise (Stunna Girl, Blanco Brown, Y2k & Bbno$, Kyle, Luh Kel, Ashnikko).
TikTok was, of course, the platform that played a huge role in the initial breakthrough of Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’. According to its page on TikTok, the track has been used in more than 2.6m videos so far.
Meanwhile, parents needing to revise the non-music hits of TikTok in 2019 in order to impress their children should take a look at the top 10 viral videos on the platform: from elephant toothpaste (17.4m likes) to banana surgery (6.1m), Kombucha Girl (2m) and bear suit daredevils (619k) it’s guaranteed to fill you with the joys of life / make you feel a decade older than you are (delete as appropriate).
