Will the number 13 be lucky for some music/tech startups? The annual Midemlab competition will be in its 13th year in 2020, and has just opened its call for entries. SoundCloud, Kickstarter, Songkick, The Echo Nest, Next Big Sound and Soundcharts are among the past participants in the contest, which is part of the Midem conference.
Music Ally is once again a selecting partner for next year’s competition too, alongside Plus8 Equity Partners and TheLynk. Three of 2020’s categories are the same as this year: music creation and education; music discovery and distribution; and marketing and data/analytics. However, the experiential technologies category has been retired this year in favour of a new category: music live experiences.
Startups must be less than five years old; ‘business-ready’ (i.e. already launched or in beta); independent rather than affiliated to a larger group; and available to pitch at Midem in June 2020. The deadline for applications is 18 February.
Startups interested can read Music Ally’s Midemlab archives for our past reports on the pitching sessions, to see how it all works.
