YouTube already goes back a long way with the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival: it has been streaming sets live from the annual event for a decade. Now it’s going back even further.

YouTube is launching a documentary about Coachella, which will explore the festival’s 20-year history. The feature-length original will go live on 31 March on YouTube, offering a mixture of interviews and performance footage from stars down the years.

The announcement of the documentary – which will be free to watch and ad-supported, in keeping with YouTube’s current originals strategy – came as the video service confirmed it will be livestreaming both weekends of this year’s Coachella. Among the twists this year: YouTube Premium subscribers will get a ‘members-only’ allocation of passes to the festival to buy.
