Tencent’s messaging app WeChat is already a huge moneymaker in terms of the way people in China use it to pay for all manner of goods and services. One of the keys to this are the ‘Mini Programs’ launched by developers and brands for WeChat: essentially apps within the app.

How much money is being spent? Tencent says that WeChat’s users spent 800bn yuan (around $115bn) through mini programs in 2019 alone, according to the South China Morning Post. That’s up 160% year-on-year.

The article notes that there are now more than 2m mini programs on WeChat, and more than 300 million daily active users of them – which is still only 26% of WeChat’s overall 1.15bn monthly active users. The piece also notes some of Tencent’s plans for WeChat mini programs in 2020, including the addition of livestreaming video.
