Deezer signs deal to offer direct telco billing in MENA region

Deezer’s ambitions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region continue. The streaming service has announced a partnership with mobile technology firm Mondia which will help people pay for Deezer in the region.

The deal involves ‘direct carrier billing’ so that people can pay for a Deezer subscription through their mobile bills. “One of the main challenges we have to figure out in the region is how to deal with low levels of credit card penetration,” said Deezer’s local boss Tarek Mounir in a statement. “The partnership with Mondia Pay lets us offer music fans an easy, secure and safe payment solution.”

The news follows Deezer’s announcement in December that it was launching a ‘soft’ bundle with Middle Eastern telco STC, offering a three-month Deezer Premium trial to its customers.

Deezer continues to deepen its partnerships in MENA, with its $185m funding round in August 2018 having included Saudi Arabian investment fund Kingdom Holding Company and media firm Rotana Group. The service launched in MENA two months later.
