Nonprofit organisation She Is The Music is campaigning to support women in the music industry, as well as to increase their numbers. Its focus so far has been on songwriting camps, mentorship programs and a global database of professionals, and now it has some heavyweight backing – including funding – from a range of companies in and around the industry.
The 19 backers include all three major labels, Spotify, Live Nation, the big talent agencies, YouTube, Facebook, ASCAP, BMI, American Express and the Annenberg Foundation.
“SITM was created to increase the percentage of women working in music and those numbers are finally beginning to shift. As we drive forward in full force, this campaign will be crucial to this pivotal moment of change,” said co-founder (and UMPG boss) Jody Gerson.
The funding will support 12 all-women songwriting camps, and US-wide speaking events for the She Is The Music mentorship program – which will now include an internship element.
