Earlier this year, Music Ally reported on YouTube’s plans to launch a Justin Bieber docu-series as part of its ‘originals’ slate. The series will include 10 episodes, with the first four released yesterday.
As a gauge of demand for the series, the first episode was released 15 hours ago at the time of writing, and has already been watched nearly 3.3m times. The second, third and fourth episodes are restricted to YouTube Premium subscribers at the moment, but will be opened up later for all to watch – a windowing strategy rather than a premium exclusive in perpetuity. YouTube is promising that the series will feature “brand new music” (it’s timed ahead of the release of Bieber’s next album).
Bieber remains the most subscribed-to artist on YouTube with 49.1 million subscribers to his channel. He also follows the likes of Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Mark Ronson, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato in getting his own YouTube original. Lovato is the artist to beat here: her ‘Simply Complicated’ documentary has been watched 28.7m times since its release in October 2017.
