Spotify is splashing its cash on producing original podcasts, but the company is also pressing ahead with getting other companies’ shows onto its platform. Its latest licensing deal is with US firm PodcastOne, which is making more than 300 podcasts available on Spotify – that’s 400+ hours of new shows every week.
Adam Carolla, Shaquille O’Neal, Kaitlyn Bristowe and Mike Tyson are among the celebrities and hosts included in the catalogue. Spotify hasn’t announced what (if any) the commercial terms of the partnership might involve.
Meanwhile, in separate news, Spotify has launched a new five-part podcast… about podcasting! Gimlet Academy is hosted by Alex Blumberg, co-founder of Gimlet Media, the podcast production company that Spotify acquired for €172m in February 2019. The podcast, originally created to teach colleagues “the secrets to making a great show”, is now being made public. “The series is for anyone interested in audio storytelling. It takes the most important lessons my friends, colleagues and I in the podcasting biz have learned over our many decades doing this work, and distills them into five easy-to-digest, fun-to-listen-to podcast episodes,” said Blumberg.
