We first wrote about Thematic in June 2018: it’s a startup founded by YouTuber (and all-round influencer) Michelle Phan, which specialised in licensing music for her fellow online stars’ videos. The pitch was “no membership fees, no licensing fees, no rev-shares” during its public beta, with all the music pre-cleared for use.
According to a crowdfunding pitch from the company on the MicroVentures platform (where it has raised nearly $65k so far) it was used by more than 25,000 creators by the end of September 2019, and generated around 1.8bn song plays for artists including Lauv, Netsky and Taboo out of the Black Eyed Peas.
Now there’s some more news on Thematic: it’s been accepted into the 26th cohort of the 500 Startups accelerator in the US. That means the accelerator will be investing $150k in the company for 6% of its equity, and Thematic will be pitching at the accelerator’s next Demo Day on 19 March.
