Users firing up Spotify’s mobile and tablet apps will be noticing a change this week: a new section at the top of the home screen greeting them with ‘Good morning / afternoon / evening’ depending on the time of day. It’s not just a friendly message though: this is a new section of Spotify’s home screen “that allows them to quickly jump back into familiar content” in the words of the company’s announcement blog post.
“Simply tap to access the podcast you stream each morning, the playlist you always tune into during your workout, or the album you’ve been playing on repeat all week. It’s a dedicated space at the top of Home to quickly and easily access your familiar music and podcasts.”
The six recommendations will change according to the time of day and the listener’s habits. Spotify isn’t the only streaming service exploring this kind of interface, of course: when YouTube Music launched in 2018, we noted its ability to use location too, serving up workout playlists because ‘it looks like you’re at the gym’.
