Sure, Lewis Capaldi makes nice ballads, but haven’t you always wanted to hear him covering a proper psychedelic dance-music banger? Don’t answer that, because he’s done it anyway.

Capaldi is the first artist to take part in a new original YouTube series called ‘Birthday Song’. It’ll see artists covering the tracks that were number one in the charts on the day they were born. Which in Capaldi’s case is 7 October 1996, when ‘Setting Sun’ by the Chemical Brothers (feat. Noel Gallagher of Oasis) was top of the UK singles chart.

According to YouTube, the full episode will launch on 24 March – a teaser went live yesterday – and will “follow Capaldi’s journey from the initial discovery of the song, researching, recording and ultimately showcasing the final cover at a performance” while also talking about his own career.

Deadline has an interview with YouTube’s Luke Hyams, who describes ‘Birthday Song’ as a potential franchise for YouTube, although he’ll wait to see how the Capaldi episode does before commissioning more.

Apparently Stormzy’s birthday song is ‘Never Forget’ by Take That, so if that doesn’t happen it will be a genuine travesty. Music Ally’s search for a British artist born during the period when ‘Mr Blobby’ was number one continues…
