TikTok has been under a lot of scrutiny in recent months, in the US particularly, over how its content moderation policies work. Now the app has appointed what US general manager Vanessa Pappas described as “an external council of leading experts to advise TikTok on content moderation policies covering a wide range of topics… thought leaders who can help us develop forward-looking policies that not only address the challenges of today, but also plan ahead for the next set of issues that our industry will face”. She promised that the advisors will be providing “unvarnished views on and advice around TikTok’s policies and practices”.
The advisors, who are listed in her post, include experts on tech policy; deepfakes and digital imaging; online safety; mental health; free speech and content regulation; political communications; and tech ethics. Seven experts have been named, with plans to expand this to a dozen – hopefully there’ll be a space for an advisor with specific music copyright experience on the list.
