We’ve seen some plucky independent startups try to go up against Amazon, Google, Apple, Baidu and other big tech companies in the past. It’s never ended well. Could Syng be different?
The company does have some useful talent within its ranks: it was co-founded by Christopher Stringer, formerly a key member of Apple’s design team, and has several former Apple designers and engineers within its ranks.
According to the Financial Times, Syng is planning to launch its first smart speaker, branded ‘Cell’, by the end of this year, with more to follow in the future. “Syng also hopes to generate revenues by licensing its audio technology to other hardware makers and through a subscription service,” claimed the FT, adding that Syng has raised around $15m of funding so far.
Stringer’s co-founders in the venture are Afrooz Family, a former Apple audio engineer who worked on its HomePod among other products, and Damon Way, co-founder of footwear brand DC Shoes and skateboarding fashion firm FACT.
