Yesterday, we covered the news that the team behind Shangri-La at Glastonbury are running Lost Horizon, a ticketed VR event, next month. We can add Belgian dance festival Tomorrowland’s Around The World event to this growing list of virtual replacements for the hole blown in this year’s summer festival season. It takes place on 25-26 July, although for now the lineup and pricing has not been announced.

“Prepare to discover a new world in which to expect the unexpected. Step into the magnificent and surreal environment with familiar but also newly-designed stages and unprecedented spectacle,” promises its teaser website.

Dance festivals are taking the lead in exploring what can be done with a blend of computer animation, video production with special effects, and in some cases full-blown virtual reality. The economics of making all this work are still up in the air, but it’s good to see this experimentation happening, and at pace.
