Rock band Def Leppard hold the record for playing the most gigs in different continents in one day (three: Africa, Europe and North America). Meanwhile, Jeff Aug holds the record for most gigs in different countries in a day (nine: Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria). Now artist Tom Walker is making his own globetrotting move, albeit online.
Today (11 June) he’s playing a “virtual world tour in 12 hours” with seven performances aimed at different timezones. The shows will be played to a handful of fans from each location and they had to apply for access in response to a post on his Instagram account yesterday.
As livestreams continue to proliferate, there’s a lot of jostling to establish points of differentiation – be that creating scarcity with limited audiences for ticketed concerts (Laura Marling); treating different social platforms as venues for a tour (L Devine); or building your own virtual venues or VR festivals (JVG, W&W, Prospa, Electric Blockaloo, Lost Horizon).
