Meditation and mindfulness app Calm has been moving deeper into music over the past 18 months – notably landing the launch exclusive for Moby’s ‘Long Ambients 2’ album last March; partnering with Above & Beyond for their ‘Flow State’ album in July; and having Sam Smith release a special mix of his single ‘How Do You Sleep?’ for the app in September.
Its latest music deal is securing the exclusive on a 60-minute mix from Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo. It is described as building upon his ‘Golden Hour’ album, which came out at the end of May, including a piano instrumental version of one of its singles, ‘I’ll Wait’.
Calm’s music activities have included appointing former UMG exec Courtney Phillips as its head of music last October. By that month, Calm had delivered 135m music streams through its app, and its founder Michael Acton Smith was also talking about an upcoming partnership with Keith Urban (Calm’s first move into country). It’s interesting, as are its deals: at one point last year, we heard that they were based around flat fees for a certain period of full ownership of the music, but that may well have evolved since.
