One of the key points made during our last Music Ally TV Show, by Kobalt’s Mulika Sannie (see lead story) was the need for music industry companies to conduct internal audits to understand not just how many non-white staff they have, but which parts of the business those staff are concentrated (or lacking) in.
In the UK, one initiative that has shed light on diversity at the industry level has been UK Music’s ‘Music Industry Workforce Diversity Survey’, which launched in 2016 and was then repeated in 2018. Now it’s time for the third edition of the study, for a report to be published later this year.
The survey collects data from labels, publishers, management companies, studios, live music firms and music licensing firms. “Now is not the time for silence! We need major change at pace with impact in the music industry. This survey helps to kickstart the change we all want and deserve,” said Ammo Talwar, chair of UK Music’s diversity taskforce.
