Björk joins Bandcamp – and Black Lives Matter will benefit

Björk is adding her entire back catalogue to D2C platform Bandcamp, with a launch offer that will see proceeds from all sales donated to Black Lives Matter UK until the end of today’s Juneteenth fundraiser on the site.

Her studio albums will be sold in digital, vinyl, CD and cassette formats on Bandcamp, making her one of the highest-profile artists so far to use the platform.

Talking of the fundraiser: it’s following the pattern of Bandcamp’s Covid-19 events, in that the company will donate 100% of its share of sales. In this case, those donations will be going to US racial justice organisation the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

In separate news, Jeff Tweedy from the band Wilco has been suggesting another way that white artists might support Black communities, in response to the way “the modern music industry is built almost entirely on Black art”. His proposal: “a program that allows songwriters and musicians to direct a percentage of their ‘writer’s share’ revenue to organizations that assist and support Black communities” – for example through a box to tick on rights management contracts. Tweedy added that he’s committing 5% of his writer revenues to organizations including Movement for Black Lives and Black Women’s Blueprint.
