Joe Biden, Kim Kardashian West, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Wiz Khalifa and Apple’s official Twitter account all had a message for followers last night: to send them bitcoin, and because they were feeling generous, they’d send back double.
Sit down and grab the smelling salts for this revelation: their accounts had been hacked. In fact, Twitter suffered a serious security breach that saw a number of verified accounts posting the bitcoin scam. “We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools,” explained Twitter a few hours ago. “We know they used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf. We’re looking into what other malicious activity they may have conducted or information they may have accessed and will share more here as we have it.” All verified accounts were limited in their ability to post while Twitter fought this fire, although most can now tweet again.
