Last June, Spotify announced an exclusive deal for podcasts from Michelle and Barack Obama’s production company Higher Ground. More than a year later, there’s news of the first show to result from the deal: The Michelle Obama Podcast.
The first episode of the show fronted by the former First Lady goes out on 29 July, with the series due to focus on “the relationships that shape us, from siblings and close friends to partners, parents, and mentors to our relationship with ourselves and our health”.
Expect the show to get an almighty promotional push on Spotify, but it’ll also be its own organic source of promotion. Media outlets will race to report on anything interesting that Obama says during the podcasts, especially if she lets slip any views on the current US president and the policies of his administration.
Higher Ground itself has eggs in multiple baskets: it has a separate deal with Netflix for TV documentaries and features, and has already won an Oscar for the ‘American Factory’ doc. A brief trailer for the new podcast is already on Spotify.
