Audio-First’ is how Spotify branded its push into podcasts last year. But as it turns out, even podcasts can be about more than audio: something recognised by Spotify yesterday when it launched “the first version of our new video podcast feature with select podcasts”.

People can play the video podcasts or just listen to the audio, with Book of Basketball 2.0, Fantasy Footballers, The Misfits Podcast, The Morning Toast and The Rooster Teeth Podcast among the first shows to get access to the new feature.

Video is already a key part of many high-profile podcasters’ strategies, including Joe Rogan, whose show will soon be exclusive to Spotify in a reported $100m+ deal. When that deal was announced, Spotify said that its video episodes “will also be available on Spotify as in-app vodcasts” so the company’s video plans have hardly been a secret.

There’s clearly also potential for video with some of Spotify’s other big signings, from Michelle Obama (whose Higher Ground production company already does video, to Oscar-winning standard) to stars from the influencer world like Addison Rae, whose Spotify-exclusive podcast was announced this week.
